Book Summary: The End of Sex, Freitas, Donna, (2013) Basic Book, New York

The hook-up culture is defined as “fast, uncaring sex you don’t remember”. The problem is that most students (2500) surveyed for the book admit not only did they remember it, but rather than feeling good about it, it left them isolated and lonely. Drinking is vital to the hook-up and the prevalence of hookups increases with alcohol consumption. Porn has left its mark on hookup culture with university party them nights featuring everything from pros and hos, CEO’s and hos, etc. (it seems women still get the crummy jobs at theme parties). Freitas says that women perpetuate porn because a relationship is perceived to slow them down professionally. She also blames parents and educators. We’ve been so busy telling kids how to have sex free of disease and babies, we’ve completely ignored educating our kids about how to have a good relationship with sex as the dessert.
